Presidents and Directors: Leadership in a
The word President brings to mind heads of republican states. But Presidents are actually the top managers of diverse organizations: associations, commissions, councils, colleges, NGO's, corporations, institutions, companies... Taking inspiration from the works by Parag Khanna (How to Rule the World), our theme refers to the fact that geopolitics is a game that is played by diverse private and public stakeholders. This diversity will be adequately represented in our simulation of the International Labour Organization which preserves the tripartite structure; in the Arab League, as political leaders of most Arab states are also powerful CEOs; in the Legislature committee which is dedicated to conflicts between cooperations and the judiciary systems. All committees, including ECOSOC and the Security Council, will ponder topics that are directly related to multilateralism.
Taking inspiration from works by Prof. Yuval Noah Harari (Homo Deus. The Brief History of Tomorrow), the theme refers to the fact that all the previously mentioned organizations are fictional entities made up of individual human beings. We want to stimulate participants' sense of leadership and tackle the issues of individual power and responsibility. We encourage participants to imagine themselves not as mere spokespeople of abstract "delegations" but as real diplomats: complex human beings who must balance the interests of their superiors (be it an employer or a sovereign nation) with their own interests.
Additionally, JLMUN 2021 is committed to the realization of a sustainable conference in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as set forward by the United Nations. Some of the SDGs which will be focused upon include Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Reducing Inequalities (SDG 10), Climate Action (SDG 13), Partnerships (SDG 17) and more.
